Biedermeier

Biedermeier is an epoch in European art. On the one hand, it can be clearly defined in terms of time, since it began with the end of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and came to an end with the bourgeois revolution in 1848. On the other hand, the art that characterizes the Biedermeier period cannot be clearly delineated, because many of its characteristics were defined only in retrospect. The term Biedermeier derives from the literary figure of Gottlieb Biedermaier, who was conceived by the writer Ludwig Eichrodt and the physician Adolf Kußmaul. The teacher Biedermeier appeared in several poems written by Eichrodt and Kußmaul for the Munich weekly "Fliegende Blätter".

In painting, the Biedermeier was distinguished above all by the fact that it largely renounced both religious and historical motifs. Preference was given at this time to landscape paintings, but also portraits. A separate genre that developed in the Biedermeier period are the so-called room paintings, which show exclusively living rooms.

Among the most important painters of the Biedermeier period was Carl Spitzweg, who created more than 1,500 paintings and drawings during his lifetime. The Berlin-born Eduart Gaertner also belonged to the art epoch, his passion was above all the depiction of the architecture of his hometown.
