Swamp Verbena (also known as Blue Vervain) is a slender, erect, native perennial that grows in most of the United States and much of Canada. It is common throughout Maryland in moist fields and swamps.
The upper stems of Swamp Verbena terminate in a panicle of clustered, stiff, erect, flowering spikes that are up to 5" long. Each spike is densely crowded with sessile, reddish blue or violet flowers. The plant is easy to identify because it is the only vervain with elegant spikes of flowers of this color.
