Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to speak at Women's Club

Former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales will be the featured speaker at 6:30 p.m. April 19 at the Lubbock Women’s Club, 2020 Broadway.

Tickets are $40, and may be obtained by calling 763-6448 by noon on April 18.

Gonzales, who has written the book, “True Faith and Allegiance,” served as the 80th attorney general of the United States during the George W. Bush presidency.

Prior to entering public service, he practiced business law for 13 years at the Houston firm of Vinson & Elkins. In 1995, he resigned his law partnership to serve as general counsel to the Texas governor, and was later appointed Texas secretary of state.

Gonzales served as a justice on the Texas Supreme Court in 1999, and was elected to a full term in the November 2000 general election. He is a military veteran who attended the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He taught political science at Texas Tech in 2010 an 2011.

Currently, Gonzales is dean and Doyle Rogers Distinguished Professor of Law at Belmont University College of Law, where he teaches courses on the U.S. Constitution, First Amendment and National Security.

Jill Nelson, chairman of a committee hosting Gonzales, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Al and his wife Rebecca back to Lubbock. I remember when Al spoke at the Ernestine Payne Welborn Endowment Community Speaker Series in 2009. His book is inspirational and shares a personal narrative of our country’s history.”

Gonzales will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the evening program.
