In case you missed it... A small number of tech companies have amassed enormous power in our modern world. Do they wield that power responsibly, or do they abuse it to benefit themselves? I talked to Tristan Harris, “the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience,” to better understand what we can do about our social dilemma. This is… A Bit of Optimism. https://bit.ly/3DpHitV

Capitalism is like the American Flag. It, in and of itself, is benign. It is a method of rewarding labor/activity/risk/innovation. The flag is a representation of all those who have come before us and sacrificed so we can have the freedom we enjoy. It is idiocy to kneel at the flag, or to slam what capitalism has bred. It is the soul of men and women that determine our human condition. If someone/some entity accumulates great wealth and uses it go in an admirable direction then things work. The big question is what is admirable because everyone has a subjective opinion. Everyone has an idea of how all that money should be used and it is much more easy to be jealous or hateful than to observe from 30,000 ft. Solution: use capitalism to your benefit. Control your own destiny and that of your local community. Use what you earn to make others aware and innovate in the other direction. You cannot keep companies from making money under capitalism (which is power)...that would be socialism. Stop buying their shit if you think they are evil.

There is a link between everything you both are saying and everything you both stand for. Social Media constructs our reality, and it uses our attention as currency. The main use of social media is for selfish reasons, and it should be for service. Social networking companies capitalize on affirmation and not information. The internet is so vast, yet social networking tries to cram the whole internet into its platforms. Also, the algorithms are created to capture and maintain our attention for the longest possible time. These 2 factors leave us busy with consuming content/information. The more we consume the less we create and live. The information overload also creates unnecessary competition for our attention between relevant and not relevant information, many times leaving important information overlooked. Then, we often find ourselves “down the rabbit hole” consuming content that is not relevant to our goals, our dreams, and our values. A simpler social network, that not only focuses us on our goals, dreams, and values, but also challenges us to expand ourselves would serve us and lead us to a happier and more fulfilling life.

The true Capitalism is supposed to be based on producing "Value" and profit is the byproduct of that! One can be a capitalist and conscientious about ethics and environment too...

Awesome conversation, Simon. We can't keep living in silos. We can't blame technology for what people are doing through it. People's behavior is at the core of this, it's people that will ultimately solve it. Tristan, love the honesty and candor.

Capitalism consumes everything. The simple fact is that profits are more important than anything the general population cares about. If companies were judged on; ✅️ How they improved the environment ✅️ How they changed global poverty If people invested based on these figures the world would be a better place, but people won't, at least not in the numbers required to change the mindset of companies that can make a difference. Also, to truly make a difference we need to enable "the unbanked" 1 billion people on earth don't have access to bank accounts or financial systems, thats 14% of the population, and most of those live in deprived areas of the world. Personally, I believe decentralised banking and crypto currencies could solve many of these problems, however, I believe central banks and governments will do everything in their power to stop it because their happy with the "Status quo"

Simon Sinek I love your videos and articles. On social conscience I'd add the entirity of The Press, who are in our lives also on a daily basis. They surely have a responsibility to not use language that constantly adversely affects the wellbeing of people. We saw it during Covid and are seeing now with inflation. At face value, if we believe that stuff you'd end up depressed - and many people do.

The irony in listening to a podcast on LinkedIn about how we need to be more human to solve our problems shows the magnitude of the dilemma. We can never deny the fortitude of a hug or a deep conversation in moving the dial towards joy and happiness which is the real point of it all right?!
