Excited to share that this week, I had the privilege of joining a delegation of British Columbia’s Mining Leaders in Victoria to discuss crucial support needed for BC’s Mining Industry. As we navigate challenges like affordability, the opioid crisis, and healthcare issues, it's essential to recognize the pivotal role mining plays in our province's economic foundation. Why Mining Matters: BC benefits from 18 operating mines and 2 smelters. Our Mines spend billions in urban, rural and First Nations communities. The Mining Industry contributes $18 billion in annual economic activity and 28% of the goods exported from BC are mined minerals. Furthermore, there are 17 mining projects now in advanced stages of development that if completed will add $36 billion in near term investment, 300,000 person years of employment, $23.6 billion in labour income, and $11 billion in tax revenues. These numbers translate into tangible benefits like job creation, economic growth, and vital revenue streams. However, our mining projects face global competition for investment and talent. Without the right support from our government, we risk losing out on opportunities that could drive our economy forward. The BC Mines have put forth crucial requests: Streamlining permitting processes for investment certainty. Empowering First Nations' engagement in mining opportunities. Prioritize BC Hydro’s capital investments and interconnections. Investing in training for future mining jobs. Ensuring stakeholder engagement throughout project reviews. These requests are not just fair; they are essential for sustaining our mining sector, which in turn fuels our economic stability. When my family and I decided to move from South America to Vancouver, British Columbia, it wasn't a decision taken lightly; it was rooted in my belief in the vast opportunities this region offers in the exploration and mining sectors, and in my conviction that it's possible to achieve a harmonious balance between communities, the environment, and the mining industry. British Columbia is renowned for its rich geological diversity and extensive natural resources, making it an ideal place for mining exploration and exploitation. What truly drew me was how this province has proven that mining can coexist sustainably with environmental care and the well-being of local communities. Through stringent environmental regulations, a strong commitment to social responsibility, and a development model that prioritizes sustainability, British Columbia is leading the way to a future where mining is not only viable but also beneficial for all involved. During my time here, my goal is to soak up all the knowledge, experience, and practices that make this coexistence possible. I aim to deeply understand how policies, technology, and management can merge to create a mining industry that contributes to economic development without compromising the future of our planet and future generations. I hope that someday, the political winds in my home country will become more favorable, and that mining, far from being demonized, will be recognized for its potential to contribute to sustainable development. I aspire to be part of that change, showing that with the right policies and a genuine commitment to sustainability, it's possible to reconcile economic interests with environmental protection and social welfare. I am here to learn, to grow, and eventually, to share these lessons with my homeland. Because I firmly believe that a better future is possible, and that we all have a role to play in building it. This week, our CEO Mark Selby had the honour of presenting to the members of the Ontario Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs. It was a privilege to share Canada Nickel’s vision for the Timmins Nickel District with our great partners in the Ontario Government. Ontario is one of the only jurisdictions in the world where we make cars and mine minerals. There is so much potential for a completely vertically integrated value chain that will last decades and generate economic benefits for generations to come. Together, with continued support and collaboration, we can unlock the full potential of the mining sector, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous Ontario. Ontario continues to have an important role to play in advancing the critical minerals needed in the global supply chain. In “Northwest Territories Faces Economic Transition Challenges,” Darrell Beaulieu, Paul Gruner, and Heather Exner-Pirot discuss the economic future of the Northwest Territories (NWT) post the recent elections. The NWT, heavily reliant on its diamond mining industry which contributes over a quarter of its GDP, faces a critical juncture as this sector nears its natural end. With major mines ceasing operations by 2030, there’s a pressing need for a new economic strategy. The authors highlight the complexities of mining in Northern Canada, including challenging logistics and regulatory frameworks, which may deter new investments. The NWT’s reliance on the diamond industry has also significantly impacted the Indigenous business sector, with over $8 billion spent on Indigenous businesses since 1996. The potential decline of this sector threatens to displace skilled workers and contractors. There are medium-sized mines developing, focusing on critical minerals like zinc, rare earths, and lithium. However, their future is uncertain. The authors urge the newly elected NWT government to collaborate with Indigenous leaders and the mining industry to create a proactive economic strategy. They recommend streamlining regulations, supporting infrastructure investments, and maximizing Indigenous participation in mining. This situation is critical for the NWT, as the impending decline of the diamond mining sector poses a significant economic threat. I had the oppprtunity to participate in an opinion piece with my colleagues Darrell Beaulieu and Heather Exner-Pirot concerning the state of the NWT economy with aging diamond mines and nothing to replace them. The current diamond mining production is a significant GDP contributor and local employment generator for the territory. We have a new Government that is in the process of being formed with Premier and cabinet being selected today. At least three things should be on the territory’s mining agenda: - Streamline permitting and regulation. This needs to include capacity support so Indigenous nations can do their own due diligence and provide timely and informed feedback regarding proposed projects. - Support investment in energy and transportation infrastructure. Financing for Indigenous development corporations needs to be a priority. With direct federal investment in projects. - Maximize Indigenous mining input. The workforce and supply chain that have been built up over the past two decades for both construction and operation of new projects are a good base on which to build. The 20th assembly has the very real opportunity to correct the current crash course that the NWT economy is on but time is of the essence. Together we can chart a path forward for a successful NWT.

Golden Sky Minerals Geological Team stakes New Ground in Timmins Ontario Timmins is the centre of Porcupine Country in Northern Ontario. Timmins exists because of mining and the some of the truly great mines have been discovered there. Timmins is home to some of the richest gold mines in Canada certainly and the world, like the McIntyre Mine, the Hollinger Mine, the Dome Mine, and the smaller Pamour Mine, to name a few. But best of all, in spite of the doom and gloom about this area running out of ore, Timmins has become even more prolific over the years, as past producers discover new areas to mine, new discoveries, with new technology add and find new deposits to mine. The Equinox Mine that is about to go into production reinforces the point. Yes, Timmins has survived many mine closings but it has also survived floods, fires, labor strife, and economic hardship, only to bounce back bigger and better than ever. Just in ‼️ The BC government has enacted measures to stop new mineral claims and pause current mining activities in areas within Gitxaala and Ehattesaht territories, while continuing work to #ReformBCMining. These new orders help to stop the immediate harm and create space for much-needed reform to BC's Mineral Tenure Act. BC must now focus on developing a new regime that respects First Nations rights & title and aligns with #UNDRIP.
