What would be the impact if everyday things were intentionally designed to be inaccessible for everyone? This work by Manasi Vaidya stood out to me today at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Student Art Association’s Spring Ceramics Sale. The way that we design things says a lot about who we expect to use them, and determines who has access and who does not have access to the outcomes enabled by their use. Manasi’s teapot, an adaptation of Don Norman’s (pioneer of User Experience) teapot, reminds me that shape is function.

  • We see a teapot that’s designed to have the spout on the same side as the handle, making it impossible to pour.
