Does Lime Water Detox Your Gut? Examining the Evidence I've heard claims that drinking warm lime water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach dissolves mucoid plaque in the gut. But what does the science say? Mucoid plaque is a hypothetical thick mucus-like buildup said to trap toxins. However, its existence has not been proven [1]. While trace amounts of mucus naturally line the gut, there is no convincing evidence of extensive plaque accumulation [2]. As for lime water, research finds it does not significantly change gastric pH or impact gut barrier function when consumed on an empty stomach [3]. Limes offer vitamin C and antioxidants, but claims about plaque-dissolving effects appear unsubstantiated. More rigorous studies are needed. For gut health, focus instead on proven strategies: get your daily fiber, eat a diverse diet, stay hydrated, exercise, and consider probiotics. Skip unproven "detox" trends with little backing. Let me know your thoughts! Do you find certain foods or drinks help your digestion?
