Despite our grid's reliance on fossil fuels, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has found that heat pumps significantly reduce carbon emissions in every U.S. state. Here's why heat pumps are a smart choice: Reduce emissions: Heat pumps can cut household energy emissions by 36% to 64% annually. Economically viable: 59% of households can save money with heat pumps, even without subsidies. Immediate impact: Adopting heat pumps now avoids locking in decades of emissions from less efficient heating sources. Today’s episode is a cool one: I’m speaking with a self-proclaimed ‘thermodynamics nerd’ who is revolutionizing how we heat and cool our homes, while drastically cutting emissions. Meet Vince Romanin, CEO and co-founder of Gradient, and guest on today’s episode of Consensus in Conversation. Born in a small town in Ohio, Vince’s curiosity for engineering was sparked early on by his love for model rockets. His journey took him from tinkering with four-wheelers to earning an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley. And that was just the beginning of his story. At Otherlab, a ‘mad scientist playground’ in San Francisco, Vince realized that the HVAC industry was ripe for innovation. HVAC systems are responsible for almost 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and Vince saw an opportunity to make a significant impact. In 2021, Vince co-founded Gradient with a clear mission: to create a heat pump system that combines personal heating and cooling into one, easy-to-install unit that reduces emissions by 95%. Gradient’s heat pumps are not just environmentally friendly—they are designed to be user-friendly and visually appealing. Vince’s goal is to make zero-carbon HVAC a reality without compromising on comfort or aesthetics. I was floored by the emotional depth, wisdom, and range of experiences shared by the panelists during the discussion I hosted and moderated last week at SF Climate Week's session “Breaking Barriers: Women Leaders in Climate Tech”.  Panelists spoke about role models, support systems, coaches, tapping into inner strength and the factors that facilitate and stymie the progress and growth of women in leaders in climate tech. We also talked about the "imposter syndrome" and how and whether this sentiment goes away after a certain amount of career success.
