Tom Wilson was the creator of the popular 'Ziggy' panel. Born in 1931 in Grant Town, West Virginia, he served in the Army before studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Wilson was an artist at the American Greetings Corp. card company in Cleveland for more than 35 years and first published Ziggy in a 1969 cartoon collection, 'When You're Not Around'.

Universal Press Syndicate then distributed as a daily panel and Sunday strip, starting in June, 1971, in only 15 newspapers. It now appears in over 600. 'Ziggy' has since appeared on a large amount of merchandise, and Andrews & McMeel has published many collections of his panels. Tom Wilson retired from the feature in 1987, and it has been continued by his son, Tom Wilson II.
