MOSUL, Iraq (Kurdistan24) – The son of a beheaded Peshmerga soldier called for help to find the body of his father.

In the video below, Kurdistan24 correspondent Hoshmand Sadiq took the family of beheaded Peshmerga soldier Hujam Surchi to Mosul for the first time where Surchi was killed by the so-called Islamic State (IS).

Surchi was wounded on the front line in the northeast of Mosul in the battle against the extremist group.

IS arrested the wounded Kurdish soldier and published a video on Jan. 21, 2015, showing Surchi’s beheading.

A Peshmerga commander, who was a friend of Surchi, explained the story to Kurdistan24.

He stated after three days of fierce fighting between Peshmerga and IS insurgents in the Shalalat area, northeastern Mosul, some villagers betrayed Peshmerga in support of IS.

As a result, the Kurdish troops were forced to withdraw, according to the commander.

“Eight Peshmerga were martyred on that day, and Hujam was arrested by [IS],” the commander said.

Peshmerga is often labeled one of the most efficient ground forces defeating the extremist group.

Since the IS war in June 2014, over 1,500 Peshmerga soldiers have fallen, and about 10,000 have been injured.
