It is not hard to see why everyone wants to share the video and pictures, mom and pup are quite the pair.

"We've had sea otters before in our great tide pool, but for having a pup at the same time in the great tide pool with that mom, it's pretty special," said Dan Albro with the aquarium.

The interaction between mom and pup is part of what is drawing people in.

"She's been protecting it," explained young visitor Lauren Elias on Monday.

Elias was there with her cousin Dani Verrue who was also enthralled by the couple.

"She's been licking it, and she's been making sure it’s OK, and it's been sleeping on her stomach, and it is really cute," Verrue said.

The sight of such a young otter is very rare for the public. The aquarium is encouraging people to come and see but to stay as quite as possible while they snap photos and ogle the baby.

Cute pictures of mother and baby went viral as soon as the aquarium put them on social media, getting hundreds of likes and thousands of shares.

Media across California starting picking up the story and on Monday morning the “Today Show” had video of the two animals.

The aquarium thinks the animal decided to come in because the tide pools are a great place to give birth and rest your tired eyes while you nurse.

"It's nice and calm in our great tide pool, and for a sea otter it is awfully hard work in the waves and the wind," Albro said.

The aquarium will let mom and baby stay as long as they want but in the past the animals leave after a couple days in search of food.
