STX Birding; plastic can harm sea birds

That plastic garbage tossed into coastal waters can have a big impact

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Our plastic trash might be hurting local seabirds. Neil McQueen from the Coastal Bend Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation of the Coastal Bend joined us for First Edition Weekend to talk about the kinds of plastic harmful to birds. That means all of the disposable plastic single use shopping bags, bottle caps, even plastic nurdles that look like fish eggs. The biggest culprit seems to be discarded fishing line they can become tangled in. If they become entangled or eat the plastic, they usually die. Some things you can do include recycling disposable plastic fishing line. Many recycling bins have been set up on fishing piers. Use reusable water bottles, shopping bags, straws and cutlery.
