A:  Hi VAFL, great question you're asking. When installed correctly, this newel will work on a step or a floor. This newel includes an installation block that can be mounted to any surface. Once the block is installed, the newel is cut to the desired height, then placed over the installation block. A:  Hi Brad, you're asking good questions. First, the hollow interior size is technically 4-1/4 inches square. However, there are glue blocks inside that hollow core that may interfere with sliding it over a 4x4 post. So if your intention is to cut down an existing 4x4, then slide this newel over that, it may not work as intended. Also know that the newel post is not hollow the entire way up the newel. The top section is solid material so that it can accept rail and fitting attachment kits.<p><p>Secondly, each of these 4091 series newels comes with an installation block that is inserted into the hollow base. It is designed to work with the 4091. That install block is secured to the floor, then the after newel has been cut to the desired height, it is installed over the installation block.<p><p>Finally, I think you're asking for a "half newel" of this design, correct? A:  Hi Scott, this newel post is hollow in the lower box, and for most of the middle portion as well. Where solid material can be found is the top block where handrail joinery is used. The bottom base is hollow, and comes with an installation block that inserts into the base. This bottom block is attached to the floor first. Once the newel post is cut to the desired height, it is placed over the installation block, then nailed/glued in place.
