Game of Thrones star Lena Headey has selected her next dramatic series television role.
The Emmy nominee will star in the Spectrum and AMC Networks‘ sci-fi series Beacon 23, an adaptation of Hugh Howey’s 2015 novel.
Headey plays Aster, “a woman who mysteriously finds her way to a lonely beacon keeper on his lighthouse in the darkest recesses of space.” The project from series creator Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One) is described as an “intimate, suspenseful thriller [that] follows two people whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe. A tense battle of wills unfolds at the edge of space, Halan [not yet cast], the beacon keeper, begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe as her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent.”
“Lena Headey was a wonderful, versatile actress before she gave one of the defining performances in television history,” said Penn, referring to Headey’s iconic role as Cersei Lannister on Thrones. “So, as they say, ‘no pressure.’ I’m thankful to all the people making this show possible, they just keep delivering beyond my expectations.”
“We had exactly one person in mind when thinking about who could play Aster – who could bring the strength, the vulnerability and the brilliance to Zak’s complex character? No one but Lena Headey,” said Katherine Pope, head of Spectrum Originals.
Since the conclusion of Thrones in 2019, Headey has lent her voice to several television projects such as Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Netflix’s Wizards, Cartoon Network’s Infinity Train and Nickelodeon’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Beacon 23 is produced by Spectrum Originals and Boat Rocker and will premiere with a nine-month exclusive run on Spectrum and then will have a second window across AMC Networks’ platforms.
Headey will also executive produce the project through her production company, Peephole Productions. Other executive producers on the project are Ira Steven Behr, Tina Thor, Elisa Ellis and Katie O’Connell Marsh.
