Kate Bosworth’s dramatic white one-sleeved, back-baring Alexandre Vauthier Couture dress isn’t the only thing that caught our eye at Saturday’s Hammer Museum Gala in the Garden, which she attended with hubby Michael Polish. Her wavy ponytail provided the perfect counterpoint to the glamorous gown, tapping into the California-cool aesthetic she’s epitomized since Blue Crush.
Celebrity hairstylist Bridget Brager — who also styles the manes of stars like Kiernan Shipka, Ali Larter and Mindy Kaling — is responsible for the ponytail, which she calls “understated. The dress and jewels were such a statement and so beautiful that I wanted to keep on the cool side with a textured pony,” says Brager. “She was going to a cocktail party, after all.”
To start, Brager prepped Bosworth’s damp hair with O&M Atonic Thickening Spray. Then, “I dried her hair so as much natural texture would come out [as possible] — a lot of scrunching the hair up and over from side to side.” Once it was dry, the stylist used a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron on random sections of hair, curling them horizontally up and then down on the same section, “so no curl pattern was the same. I wanted lived-in hair.”
After curling, she sprayed Bumble & Bumble City Swept Finish onto the lengths of the hair and shook her mane well. “Next, I secured the ponytail with a bungie just under the crown of the head, and wrapped a piece of hair around it, securing it with a hairpin.” Brager used a light spritz of Ellnet hair spray to keep everything in place. Voila — an ultra-cool ponytail that can go from lunch to cocktail party.
