Low Maintenance Houseplants

Houseplants are an excellent way to add some life and greenery to your home, but only some have the time or energy to care for high-maintenance plants. Fortunately, plenty of low-maintenance houseplants are perfect for beginners, small spaces, or anyone who wants to add some green to their home without too much effort.

If you're new to indoor gardening, it's best to start with plants that are easy to care for and don't require a lot of attention. Here are our top low-maintenance houseplants for beginners:

Snake Plant: This plant is virtually indestructible and can survive in almost any light condition. Ever popular as an office plant, it’s also good for mental and physical health,  is one of the better houseplants at providing clean air. The single leaf of this plant is of wonderful greens and gives the impression of freshness - it’s a great plant for stress relief!

Scindapsus ‘Marble Queen’ has large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves of green marbled with cream. Scindapsus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. It is native to Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Queensland, and a few western Pacific islands.

Its amazingly rich green foliage is a striking feature and it looks luscious and attractive in any room in your home. Imagine it in its natural Central American jungle habitat - it’s an epiphyte, so clings to the branches of other trees rather than living on the ground, which gives it a better chance to reach the rain and the light.

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia or the ZZ plant is a very easy-going houseplant that is forgiving if you forget to water, tolerates low light and rarely needs to be fertilized. The perfect houseplant. The Zamioculcas Zamiifolia has thick, upright stems bearing narrow, dark-green glossy leaves. A slow-grower indoors, the ZZ plant rarely needs repotting. ZZ plants are gorgeous, tough and easy to care for, and enjoy plucking the toxins out from the air - frankly what's not to love!

The ZZ plant will look great in any room, it gives that magazine cover style to give added interest to an empty corner in your house. Really bringing the rainforest feel, it is relaxing to look at and easy to care for.

Originating in central Africa, Zamioculcas, or the ZZ plant is very well adapted to coping with drought and it will tolerate neglect - so if you tend to forget to water plants then this one will forgive you - at least for a while!

The Dumb Cane has beautiful leaves and offers instant impact. The impressive Dieffenbachia Camilla is a variant of the regular Dumb Cane which creates instant impact in any room with its striking lime leaves. Low-maintenance and an excellent choice for anyone new to growing houseplants. The Dieffenbachia Camilla will thrive as long as it's water only when it's completely dry and kept in a warm and sunny spot.

We love the ever-popular rubber plant or ficus elastica plant for its simplicity and tropical looks. Picture emerald green, glossy leaves shiny enough for droplets of water to slide off….picture a large, tall houseplant standing proudly in your home, bringing a taste of the lush, wild rainforest to your hallway or your living room….the Rubber Plant has all of this and more.

It’s a classic, it has stood the test of time, remaining very popular over decades, never losing its appeal.  It’s one of our extra-large houseplants.

The Rubber Plant rubber plant ficus Elastica is rewarding to grow and beautiful when mature. As it thrives in areas with full sun to partial shade, it will suit any room in the house, wherever you want to add a dash of the exotic. When growing the Rubber Plant indoors, avoid drafts near large windows or doors.

Everybody loves the amazing, exotic-looking small Aloe Vera plant! We love its enduring appeal! This Small Aloe Vera Plant is a really well known succulent for its medicinal qualities and uses in skincare.  It’s also a really interesting houseplant - sculptural and relaxing to look at, this lovely little succulent is a really easy care Houseplant, so if you’re new to houseplants then Aloe Vera might be ideal for you! In this small size, Aloe vera houseplant will fit snugly on a shelf or on top of a dresser or a table

The Spathiphyllum or the Peace Lily is a wonderfully elegant houseplant, that makes the perfect gift. A popular choice for a home or office, being a luxuriant foliage plant as well as producing beautiful flowers. It’s also great at cleaning the air - good looks and health benefits too, what more could you ask for?

Peace Lilies are also remarkably easy to look after for something so exotic looking - keep them in a semi-shaded position and you’re on the right track.  Think of them peeping out of the dappled shade in the rainforest and you’ll have the right idea for their care. A lot of people assume that tropical plants must like full sun but generally with rainforest plants that’s not the case - the forest provides lots of shade so many plants prefer not to be in the full glare of the sun.

Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. Mauritiana is a native of Brazil and is a beautiful easy-care plant wIth cactus-like trailing leaves. It's a very fast grower and with a little care, it will thrive in a small pot for years.

We love this plant for its easy care nature and unusual almost alien-like appearance providing interesting structure and shape. It works well as a potted plant or as a hanging plant.

In the wild it's native to Brazil, where it lives in tropical subtropical or tropical forests, hanging or hanging on branches or growing in the hollow of old trees. The main threat to the species is deforestation.

In its native habitat, it can be found growing along tree branches as an epiphyte, never harming its host but growing in harmony adding to the biomass and diversity of an ecosystem. Rhipsalis will grow in almost any light condition making it ideal as a houseplant and it travelled around the world being cultivated into many forms as a houseplant. It will, however, grow best in bright indirect light.

Keeping houseplants alive and healthy requires a bit of knowledge and effort, but the rewards are well worth it. By choosing the right plant, watering properly, providing the right amount of light, keeping your plants clean, providing proper ventilation, keeping pests away, and repotting when necessary, you can ensure that your houseplants thrive and add beauty to your home for years to come.
