Weekly shopping

Great array of produce vendors (especially in summer but winter is also good), including specialty stands for things like maple products, gourmet mushrooms, olives, nuts, spices/oils/vinegars, flowers. and so on. The butcher and fish stands are relatively easy to avoid if seeing them upsets you.

There are several places to eat something at the market as well. The crepe stand has a vegan sweet and a vegan savory crepe. The little diner-looking place has some lovely soups. Even the ice cream stand is vegan friendly with at least a dozen lovely sorbets, all vegan!

Definitely a great place to do some weekly shopping in Montreal. It’s a lot of fun for tourists if you have visitors too.

Lots of vegan items and fresh produce

Many vendors of fresh produce. Lots of apples and potatoes (December). Many vendors of vegan items, including juices, mushrooms, nuts, organic produce and chilled/packaged items. A small bookshop had two vegan cookbooks on display outside their door.
Some vendors don’t speak English.

Local and fresh

I love Jean-Talon market!!! The atmosphere and the colors of the fruits and veggies in the summer is super nice. It is my go to to buy local and fresh fruits and veggies. Plus, most stands don’t use packaging. They will put your food in plastic bags, only if you want them to. Personally, I really going there, because I can be zero waste and use my own bags to carry fruits and veggies that I buy.

Pros: Fresh , Local, Open-air market

Fruits and Vegetables

the Jean-Talon market was our go to for lunch. it is a sheltered outdoor market with a huge variety of local fruits and vegetables. finding a vegan meal was not as easy as I expected it, but in the end the meal that I found was incredible good.

I can highly recommend to get roasted cashews there (unsalted), they are really good!!
You can also get treats like baklava and Arabic sweets in general. And if you want also maple Sirup or other souvenirs.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere at this market even though you are surrounded from lots of meat, fish, cheese and dairy booths.

Pros: lively market atmosphere, lots of local fruits an vegetables

Cons: Vegan meal options not easy to find, mostly no vegan or vegetarian option
