MAULDIN – In athletics, fans will come across an athlete from time-to-time that personifies the denotative meaning of their name.

In the case of Mauldin junior volleyball star Jurnee Robinson, she is truly on a quest to become one of the best players in school history.

Robinson’s “journey” began when she was a freshman, and she has led the Mavericks to a 19-5 overall and a 4-0 Region 1-AAAAA record this season.

“I feel like our growth is on track for where we want to be heading into the second half of the season,” said Mauldin coach Val Thoms. “We are playing very well and look strong.”

Robinson, who has twice been named to the all-state team, has provided a dominant force for the Mavericks.

“It’s rare to have an athlete so naturally talented when it comes to overall athleticism,” Thoms said. “What is even more rare is to have that athlete plus other impressive and gifted teammates… We are strong in every position on the floor. We have experience, determination and big, big dreams.”

Robinson said the Mavericks’ goal this season was a simple one.

“Our team goal is to win state,” Robinson said. “Mauldin volleyball has never won state for the sport of volleyball, and we all believe this year is the year.”

Robinson is 6 feet tall and plays outside hitter. She is one of the top players in South Carolina and is certainly gaining attention from the next level. Thoms said she is not only a joy to coach, but also to watch.

“(She) has added a level of athleticism and power to our offense that makes us tough to play,” Thoms said. “Her jumping ability and power of her arm swing are what make her very successful as a hitter. She is dynamic so she can hit a range of shots and attack effectively from the back row.”

Robinson praised her teammates’ work ethic in preparation of the season.

“What makes us special is that we connect more with each other than other teams,” Robinson said. “For Senior Night, we were all very emotional because we are all so very close, and it felt like we were losing family.”

Mauldin has played a tough schedule as the Mavericks have competed against perennial powers Dorman, J.L. Mann, St. Joseph’s and Pickens. Thoms said the Mavericks are on the right track as they approach the postseason.

“This team plays with inspiration and passion,” Thoms said. “We are looking forward to the best season yet.”

The Mavericks advanced to the third round of the playoffs in 2019; however, did not make the postseason last year during the COVID-19 shortened season.

Thoms said Robinson has shown great maturity in leading the Mavericks this year.

“Jurnee is a young learning leader,” Thoms said. “She cares deeply for her teammates, and is passionate about the game.”

Robinson has been on the Under Armour Phenom Watch List since her 13-U club season.

“My goals after high school are to play in college and hopefully make the USA Team and to play overseas,” Robinson said.

The Mavericks’ star player may consider this season somewhat of an adventure; however, as she continues to accomplish her athletic goals, Robinson is taking additional steps on her “journey.”
