Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith will speak later this month at the United Way of Weld County Community Leaders Luncheon.

Smith, who won Super Bowls with the Broncos in 1998 and 1999, will headline the event, which is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. September 28 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Greeley, according to a news release from United Way of Weld County.

“We are excited to have Rod Smith join us for our annual Community Leaders Luncheon,”current United Way vice president of Community Impact and soon to be president and CEO Melanie Woolman said in the release. “While Mr. Smith’s story is, like all of ours, uniquely his, I expect that it contains the great themes of human striving: aspiration, determination, risk-taking, support from others and more.”

Smith grew up in a lower income neighborhood in Texarkana, Ark., according to the release. He earned three business degrees from Missouri Southern State University, where he played football.

He played 14 seasons for the Denver Broncos at wide receiver, being named an All-Pro twice in addition to the pair of Super Bowl titles. Since retirement, he has become an author, speaker, entrepreneur and business coach.

“I am looking forward to hearing Rod, learning from him and being inspired by him,” Woolman said in the release.

The luncheon will also feature an update on community-wide initiatives from United Way officals: Reading Great by 8, which focuses on early childhood development; Thrive by 25, youth success; Weld’s Way Home, household stability; Aging Well, healthy aging; and Connecting Weld, access to services.

In addition, there will be a special recognition for Jeannine Truswell, long-time serving and outgoing United Way president and CEO.

Seating for the United Way of Weld County Community Leaders Luncheon is limited. Registration is $45 per person, with tables of 10 available for $450.
