Jim Carrey is following in the footsteps of David Letterman, Rick Rubin, and Joaquin Phoenix and is growing an epic, mountain man beard. It’s the kind of beard that is both creepy and oddly stylish and calls to mind The Dude. Carrey’s particular beard has nice contrast with his shiny, straight hair and is impressively groomed—as much as a thing of that size can be. We’re into it, we’re very into it. And we’re not the only ones.

Carrey addressed the beard on Jimmy Kimmel last night saying, “Everywhere I go, people talk about the beard. They can’t really think about anything else. Wherever I show up, it becomes this story. It's a bigger star than me. It has its own Twitter." And that’s sort of the point of growing one of these beards, in a way. It’s a bit deflective. It takes the steering wheel. It gives the man wearing the beard a little bit of privacy. Considering Jim Carrey has slowed down his acting career considerably over the last couple of years and is spending more time doing things like painting, it makes sense that he’d pull the Out of Office grooming card.

Seems the time out of the spotlight has allowed Carrey to ponder some important life and grooming-related questions, too. He told Kimmel, "The question is not, 'Why are you growing a beard?' The question is, 'Why am I growing a beard and still shaving my balls? It doesn't make any sense." The audience laughed. “I think it’s like a balance thing,” he hypothesized, “So if I ever shave my face again, you’ll know…there’s a full beard somewhere.” We’ve always maintained that hair-to-beard ratio was important. Carrey just took the theory to a new...low.
