July issues of Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair

Rhode Island women are on two of the top national magazine covers for the month of July.

Central Falls’ native and award-winning actress Viola Davis — one of GoLocal’s 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders — is the cover of this month’s Vanity Fair.

“My entire life has been a protest,” said Davis in Vanity Fair’s cover story.

In June, Davis urged Rhode Island graduates to “pursue significance more than success.” On Instagram on Tuesday, Davis shared the following about her feature.

“Not a lot of narratives are invested in our humanity,” Davis wrote, who’s about to star in roles as Michelle Obama and blues legend Ma Rainey.

“They’re invested in the idea of what it means to be Black…but it’s catering to the white audience.”

Culpo on Sports Illustrated

Former Miss Rhode Island, Miss USA, and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo is featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

One version has Culpo along with Kate Bock and Jasmine Sanders; there are also individual issues of each model.

“Wow! I am really speechless and this still doesn’t feel real,” said Culpo in an Instagram post.

“I am very grateful for every experience I have been able to have with my @si_swimsuit family,” she wrote.

Culpo went on to talk about how she created a “vision board” to achieve her dream.

“To anyone who sees this, never stop visualizing and striving for what you want. Don’t lose hope and remain focused and persistent.”
