After seven long seasons as a judge, Katy Perry may be bidding American Idol farewell. That's the bad news. The good news is that she's hinting heavily that she may be clearing her schedule for recording new music.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 12, Perry announced that she was leaving Idol. Probably. “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol,” she told the late-night host. “I mean, I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.” And she means that literally.

“It’s going to be a very, very exciting year,” Perry said, adding that her Idol cohosts may not have known that she was planning to leave the show, but they definitely know she has something in the works. “I've been in the studio for a while, so they figured something is coming,” she said. “I love the show so much, but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

Katy Perry hasn't released an album since she dropped Smile in 2020. After four years, no wonder she's been feeling like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind, wanting to start again.
