The world lost a legend late last night. The inimitable rock star David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer.
As many do in times of mourning, the beauty community has gone to social media to reflect and discuss the impact the singer has left on the world, painting a beautiful portrait of stories filled with love, creativity, passion, and, of course, glitter. Take, for example, the heartfelt memory makeup artist Fiona Stiles shared: "He was one of the most gracious, kind, witty human beings I ever met and his influence on me was so pure and deep. The first time I worked with him he sat on the couch and strummed 'Life on Mars' and I almost died. We went to galleries together and listened to new bands together. I turned him on to bands and he broadened my musical horizon. He could disarm anyone with his charm and his smile, and he always made me feel like part of the family. And hairstylist Jen Atkin's eloquent message to the next generation: "I highly recommend you watch a ton of David Bowie documentaries, listen to at least one of his records, and be inspired for life. He was rebellious, artistic, and had such a huge impact on so many musicians. We should all go through our 'Bowie phase' at least once in life." Indeed.
Bowie is survived by his wife, supermodel Iman, 60, who has also had a profound influence on the beauty industry with the launch of Iman Cosmetics—a beauty company that created the first cosmetics and skincare collection designed for women of color—in 1994. Our hearts and thoughts are with her and their family.
Read on to see the touching tributes those within the beauty industry have left for the singer this morning.
