Eupatorium purpureum or Joe Pye is a tall, clump-forming perennial with large leaves that are palmately divided into narrow leaflets.
In late summer it produces very large heads of fluffy pink or mauve flowers that are born at the end of the stems in domed clusters.
This is an attractive perennial that does well in cottage and perennial gardens whilst attracting butterflies, bees and beneficial insects.
It is particularly good for the back of mixed borders and mixes well with other taller border plants like Dahlia and Canna or as a contrast with ornamental grasses. And for its height, it rarely needs staking.
