Lawren S. Harris

Greenland Mountains

c. 1930
During his trip to the Arctic, Harris visited Greenland, where he selected icebergs – objects shaped by time and the harsh northern elements – as his subjects. Limited to a palette of blues, white and brown, the artist’s seamless brushwork creates a staged scene that conveys the idea that the vast North is somehow beyond understanding. The ice becomes a spiritual idea inhabiting a material form.
