The Berlin Wall fell 30 years ago. See photos from its existence

Peering through binoculars, Mrs. Rose Kennedy, mother of the President, looks over barbed wire on the Berlin Wall into East Berlin today. Capt. A West German takes hammer and chisel to the Berlin Wall on Nov. 11, 1989, in the midst of the euphoria that reigned for days After East German authories opened the gates on Nov. 9, 1989. The wall, which was erected in 1961, became the ultimate symbol of Iron Curtain dividing Eastern Europe from the West.The wall's fall was hailed around the world as a victory for freedom and democracy.

East German border guards peer over the top of the Berlin Wall recently as military police stand in West Berlin. Since the Communist East German government began construction of the wall of fifteen years ago, it has grown from about eight feet in height to thirteen, is made of steel and concrete, and holds back all but fewer than an estimated 200 escapes a year.Some human contact has been kept up across the Berlin Wall as a result of West Germany's practical approach.

Berlin Wall

The Brandenburg Gate was photographed in the 1970s by Free Press chief photographer emeritus Tony Spina, long before the Berlin Wall in front of it came tumbling down.

After leaving West Berlin, the occupants of a car are checked by a guard recently at Checkpoint Charlie before being permitted passage to East Berlin. The heavily fortified checkpoint is a slalom of barriers and shares some of the 12,000 heavily armed guards that patrol Communist East Germany's wall surrounding West Berlin.

Berlin Wall, a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin.
