Actor. Perhpaps best known to international audiences for his role as Hugo Drax, the megalomaniacal villain in the 1979 James Bond film, Moonraker, Lonsdale was born in Paris, France, the son of an English Army officer and his French wife. Following a brief period studying art, he entered into the world of acting, a choice which would see him feature in nearly 200 film, television, and radio productions. Another acclaimed role for which Lonsdale is remembered is that of Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel, the second lead in 1973's adaptation of the Frederick Forysth novel, The Day of the Jackal. A highlight of his later career came in 2010 with his supporting role in the French film, Of Gods and Men. The film which depicts the final days of a group of Trappist monks held hostage during the Algerian Civil War, garnered Lonsdale a César award; the highest film honor in his native France.
