Awaken your mystical side with the Fall Equinox at Chichen-Itzá

While there are hundreds of archeological treasures that can be explored in Mexico, Chichén Itzá is easily the most famous and well-preserved. Its proximity to Cancun has made it by far the most visited archaeological site in Mexico and one of the most visited sites in the world. Once the center of political and economic activity in the Mayan world, Chichén Itzá thrived from around 600 A.D. to the 1200s. Its centerpiece, El Castillo (“the castle”), is a pyramid-shaped structure also known as the Temple of Kukulkan. Thanks to restoration efforts and ongoing maintenance on the part of the Mexican government, it still stands today in what most consider to be excellent condition.

Twice each year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall, Chichén Itzá comes to life as the sun is positioned directly over the equator and the length of day and night is almost equal. The fall equinox on September 23rd attracts thousands of visitors who gather at Chichén Itzá to witness an awe-inspiring phenomenon of shadow movement known as the “serpent of light” as the sun aligns with the Temple of Kukulkan.

Specifically, a 10-story shadow of a giant serpent magically appears at sunset and slowly descends the steps of the pyramid as if it were descending from the heavens. The shadow effect slowly creeps down each stair until it connects with a huge serpent’s head at the bottom of the pyramid’s stairway. The shadow’s journey begins in the late afternoon and lasts about forty-five minutes before disappearing into the crowd. Legend has it that on this day Kukulkan, known as the feathered serpent god, descends from the heavens to bless his believers on earth, and then continues on his way to the underworld. Today, this mystical event demonstrates what many believe to be a stunning example of the highly advanced astronomical, scientific, and geometric knowledge of the ancient Mayan civilization.

Visitors during the Fall Equinox celebration, also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of rituals and ceremonies led by Mayan priests. In anticipation of the afternoon sunset, the site has an almost carnival-like atmosphere with ancient purification rituals, yoga and meditation, modern and traditional music, dance performances, and an array of authentic Mayan cuisine. Visitors come from around the world and often dress in white clothes in an effort to rid themselves of “bad vibes” and absorb positive energy from the new sun. Whether you are a history buff, someone seeking spiritual healing, or you are simply curious about the Mayan culture, the Fall Equinox at Chichén Itzá is a true bucket list experience.
