The shadow’s journey begins in the late afternoon and lasts about forty-five minutes before disappearing into the crowd. Legend has it that on this day Kukulkan, known as the feathered serpent god, descends from the heavens to bless his believers on earth, and then continues on his way to the underworld. Today, this mystical event demonstrates what many believe to be a stunning example of the highly advanced astronomical, scientific, and geometric knowledge of the ancient Mayan civilization.
