UK's 'most underrated city' also named one of country's 'most dismal' by residents

The city receives mixed opinions from the locals that live there with one resident calling it a 'dismal London commuter belt town'.

An "underrated" UK town which is nothing more than a fleeting train stop for many has been describes by locals as "dismal".

The unassuming commuter city of Milton Keynes, 55 miles from London, has now risen to the ranks of one of Britain's "most underrated holiday destinations."

Independent Cottages, a holiday-home website, carried out a study earlier this year to uncover overlooked gems.

Its approach centred on the scarcity of guidebooks dedicated to a place. They searched guidebooks to find which under-explored areas in the UK had the fewest mentions yet had lots of attractions.

In a world saturated with travel information, "the lack of written guides indicated untapped potential", according to a spokesperson for the brand.

Milton Keynes, a new town established in 1967, stood out in the study because it turns out the town has no guidebooks written about it.

Despite its lack of guidebooks, if you delve deeper into the city you realise the city has lots of notable attractions to offer.

For one, Milton Keynes has Bletchley House - the famous location for code-breaking during World War 2 - and the stately home and deer park, Woburn Abbey.

Experts have therefore decided the city should be ranked the number one most underrated destination in Britain.

The area is also home to The Snozone indoor snow centre, which promises a unique and frosty escape.

Meanwhile the Milton Keynes Theatre and the Big Rock Hub provide opportunities to immerse yourself in cultural experiences.

But not everyone agrees. A website called iLivehere did a survey where they asked more than 105,000 people about the best and worst places to live in the UK.

Milton Keynes ended up ranking number 35th on the list of "worst places" - and failed to make it on to the list for best places to live.

One user of the website said Milton Keynes is "like a boring town for people who work in London" and are just trying to find a place to live.

They called it a "dismal London commuter belt town" and said it's filled with a lot of concrete buildings and roads.

They added: "A long-standing national joke about Concrete Cows, the gridded roads and a bought in football team. That’s most people’s sum knowledge about Milton Keynes, and to be honest, it was mine until I had the dire misfortune to think that moving here would be a viable choice. I’ve been here six months and I have come to loathe the place with a fiery passion.

"Retail parks, retail parks as far as the eye can see. A Starbucks, a Costa, this place is not for me."

The reviewer said the poor are separated from the rich by only a few roads and roundabouts and that the estates are "desperate".

They added: "There’s a lot of words to be said about MK, but I’ve said enough: Milton Keynes IS dismal: a huge sprawling ‘Sim City’ of buildings that are lucky if they see 40 years use.

"A place where excuses are frequently made for it’s obvious flaws. A place with a huge poor-rich divide, a place where a concrete monstrosity of a former Bus Station that would have been levelled anywhere else is actually a listed building.”
