French Open champion Garbine Muguruza crashed out of the first round of the Mallorca Open when she was beaten 6-3 6-4 by Kirsten Flipkens.
The Spaniard - whose victory over Serena Williams at Roland Garros saw her climb to second in the world rankings - failed to make the most of an early break in her first match of the grass-court season as Belgian Flipkens rallied to close out the first set against the tournament's top seed.
Flipkens, the world number 61, continued her momentum to break Muguruza and move 4-3 ahead before completing victory in one hour and 14 minutes.
A disappointed Muguruza, also a Wimbledon finalist in 2015, said afterwards, quoted on www.wta.com: "I barely had time to actually practice and enjoy the tournament.
"I wanted to play Mallorca so much and I tried, but then I went to the court and obviously I couldn't find my rhythm."
Flipkens will next meet Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, who beat Germany's Julia Goerges 6-4 7-5.
Elsewhere, there were first-round victories for third seed Ana Ivanovic as the Serbian beat Pauline Parmentier of France 6-4 6-4, while eighth seed Eugenie Bouchard also progressed with a 6-3 7-5 win over Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.
Number four seed Kristina Mladenovic is out after she was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who was runner-up on grass at Wimbledon in 2013.
Yulia Putintseva, the fifth seed from Kazhkastan, also failed to progress, losing 6-3 6-2 against Romania's Sorana Cirstea.
Seventh seed Laura Siegemund of Germany did book a place in round two as she defeated Japan's Nao Hibino 7-6 (7/1) 6-4.
At a rain-hit W TA Aegon Classic in Birmingham, double Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova opened up her grass-court campaign with a brisk 6-3 6-2 victory over fellow Czech Lucie Safarova
However, Karolina Pliskova, winner of the Aegon Open in Nottingham, was knocked out by Barbora Strycova in another battle of the Czech players as the number seven seed lost 6 -4 7-6 (9/7).
Defending title holder Angelique Kerber, seeded number two, made it through as the German beat Shuai Peng of China 7-6 (7/3) 6-3.
