Eleni Daniilidou of Greece defeated Australia's Olivia Rogowska 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on Saturday to assume her place in the Malaysian Open semi-finals.
Former world number one Jelena Jankovic also advanced after her opponent, Japan's sixth-seeded Ayumi Morita, pulled out because of a shoulder injury at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort.
Daniilidou will have only a few hours of rest before she faces Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei in the semi-finals after a gruelling battle.
Rogowska provided a stern resistance and had the momentum in the final set after responding to losing the first 6-2 by taking the second 6-3.
But Daniilidou raced through the deciding set in emphatic fashion, taking it 6-2 with a burst of intensity and Rogowska was unable to match her opponent’s level.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Jankovic, currently ranked 14th, will next face number five seed Petra Martic of Croatia in the last four.
The tournament has been hit by injuries and rain delays, with top seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland being forced to withdraw on Friday due to an elbow injury.
