It was another miserable night for Manchester United after they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in humiliating fashion by Newcastle at Old Trafford. Miguel Almiron opened the scoring in the first half before Lewis Hall made it two before the break. Joe Willock wrapped up a 3-0 win with a fine strike in the second half.

Pressure mounted on Erik ten Hag after Manchester United were beaten at home in embarrassing fashion, going down 3-0 to Newcastle to exit the Carabao Cup.
Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock scored the goals as the holders were summarily dismissed by the side they beat in last season’s final – which seems a very long time ago now.
Newcastle had by far the better of the first half, better organised and more committed than a sorry United. They look the lead on 29 minutes when a terrific counter led by Tino Livramento was finished by Miguel Almiron, then doubled the advantage nine minutes later thanks to Lewis Hall’s beautifully controlled volley.
United mustered a spell of pressure after the break, but struggled to create and a Newcastle clincher seemed just as likely as a United livener. And sure enough, Willlock snaffled possession after Joelinton robbed Amrabat, his low finish cementing the result with almost half an hour still to play.
Little of note happened thereafter, Newcastle comfortably playing out time as their hosts huffed and puffed; they move into the next round. For Ten Hag, though, ejection from the Carabao Cup is the least of his worries.

Talking point

Any team that plays Newcastle knows something: that whatever happens and even if they win, it’s going to hurt. Every ball, every pass and every run is contested; defenders cover, midfielders track, strikers offer.

The opposite is so of Manchester United, even less the sum of their parts than Newcastle are greater. There are petulant fouls rather than hard tackles, everything is done slowly, and there's little appetite to redeem errors.

It should not be like this, and though the players have responsibility for themselves, overall responsibility belongs to Erik ten Hag, whose job it is to inspire and drill them. Well, if he’s not careful, they're going to jeopardise his job, so the time has come for him to make some bold decisions.

He did so last season, when dropping Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire after two games, and he must now give a run to players yet to let him down. Kobbie Mainoo is fit again, Mason Mount should move to the right, where Antony continues to disappoint, and Marcus Rashford can only be selected if prepared to press. But more than anything, Ten Hag needs to have his players playing some kind of style, because currently they look clueless – a damning indictment of both them and him.

Player of the match - Tino Livramento (Newcastle United)

Made the first goal with a terrific driving run, and defended Alejandro Garnacho well.

Match highlights

29’ - GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle United (Almiron) Garnacho goes at Livramento, is shrugged off with embarrassing ease, and the drive forward is superb - Mount's effort to stop him less so. He might go right to Gordon, instead he waits and goes left to Almiron, running away from the daydreaming Dalot, and the finish, high across Onana, as Dalot slides in, is terrific. Great goal

36’ - GOAL! Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle United (Hall) United give away a free-kick then bitch at the ref while Newcastle take it, Dalot switches off again, and when Maguire heads away Willock's cross ... it drops directly onto Hall's left boot. But what a volley he delivers, watching it all way before controlling a finish into the far corner!

45+1’ - MARTIAL, WHO SHOULD BE IN THE BOX AND ISN'T
Slides across the face of it to Dalot, who makes decent connection with a low shot, but it scooshes a foot or so wide of the far post.

45+3’ - UNITED MOVE IT OFF THE LEFT
To Mount, loitering outside the box, and he wipes his foot across a decent effort, swerving away, that Dubravka dives to shove behind; the corner comes to nowt.

61’ - GOAL! Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle United (Willock) This is a lovely goal, Willock grabbing possession when Joelinton crunches Amrabat in midfield, and he races goalwards as Gordon's run befuddles both Lindelof and Maguire, stroking a luscious low finish from the edge and into the near-post bottom corner.

76’ - NEWCASTLE WIN A CORNER DOWN THE LEFT
And when United half-clear it, it winds up with Longstaff, 23yards out, right of centre ... and he controls, then absolutely annihilates a dig that almost floats the connection is so perfect, flying inches past the far post, halfway up.
