The Sphinx
The sphinx embodies beauty, intelligence, and strength. The regal qualities of a lion, a human visage and feathered wings combine to shape this magnificent creature. The form of the sphinx has been used in centuries-old art to represent the power of pharaohs and queens. A sphinx may appear as male or female, depending on the culture of origin of the tales that feature the creature. Legend has it that the sphinx is famous for tormenting unlucky travelers by asking them to answer nearly unsolvable riddles. Those who can solve her puzzles may continue on their journey; those who can't meet their doom.
The Sphinx is a creature featured in my book "The Explorer's Guide to Drawing Fantasy Creatures." In keeping with the field guide style of the book, this print re-creates the style of a turn-of-the-century zoological illustration.
This is a 13"x19" Limited Edition print with an edition of 50.
