Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev lost to their compatriots, Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The pair played quite well but had to settle with the Silver medal in the end. The final scoreline of the match was 3-6, 7(7)-6(5), 13-11.
It was quite a shocking defeat for Elena Vesnina who is quite famous for making some incredible comebacks on the court. Even though she missed the Olympic Gold, she really impressed fans with her exceptional performances in Tokyo.

In the finals, there was a point when Vesnina and Karatsev won a Gold medal point. However, they failed to capitalize on it and as a result, Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova emerged as the winner after winning their fourth Gold medal point.
During the post-match interview, Vesnina just could not control her emotions and broke down into tears. She was not happy with her Silver medal as she realized that she could have won the Gold had she not missed that important point.
While she was crying, Karatsev displayed some great character and tried to console her. He even praised the Russian player for her phenomenal performances throughout the season.

Vesnina made headlines after she won the Gold medal in the doubles category at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016. She won the Gold with her partner Ekaterina Makarova after defeating the Swiss pair of Time Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis.

This year too, she managed to reach the semis of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 but lost there. Unfortunately, she even missed the Bronze medal as she and her partner Veronica Kudermetova lost a very close match to the Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Laura Pigossi.
