Replaced 5.1 system with YSP-800 to eliminate existing large front speakers and number of speakers (spouse request). Sound is good, but separation and smoothness of bass is not as good as the 5.1. Am using the same 100W Yamaha subwoofer in both systems, but there is a difference in the low end due to the lack of the large floor speakers. Calibrated room/system using the reference microphone but have tweaked multiple times. There is a growl in voices which I don't like, but can only change two EQ settings high/low and have not been able to eliminate the growl. Usual setting to play movies is stereo plus 3 beam as it gives surround sound depth plus more volume. Other settings can be too echo-ey. Overall the YSP-800 looks good and for the used price ($185 plus $20 shipping) it's a good value.Read full review
Excellent sound quality with little distortion. I have this set up in a small den and it is great for watching movies. The jack field in rear is not the best (no hdmi) and not set up great but you can work with it. The manual is ninety pages long and not so easy to follow. The quick set-up is the saving grace of the unit (I used it). I have not bought the subwoofer to add as of yet, will it improve the experience? We'll see. If you love pure undistorted sound this unit is for you.
This was a replacement for the Yamaha YSP-800 Digital Soundbar that we had for over 15 years when a couple of speakers finally went out. We loved it and this one works just as well.

I had a problem with the rear facing speakers in my flat screen TV. Problem solved with YSP 800. Only con: Speaker is tall and protrudes into TV picture area. This will not be a problem if your TV is mounted on the wall or you have space to locate your YST 800 above or below your TV. Love the versatility of this unit. Now I can undertand TV conversation.
The YSP-800 is much more sophisticated than the Sony and Phillips sound bars for the low $200s. Connections are easy and programming with the supplied microphone is a snap. It offers numerous features including surround sound, stereo, and targeted where it aims all the sound at a single point to allow night use without keeping everyone up. The unit is substantial (about 25 lbs) so mounting on a shelf under the tv is your best bet.
