Robot Wars returned to BBC Two tonight, as series three continues with teams battling it out to win this year's title.

While last week saw a Donald Trump-inspired robot called Donald Thump, tonight's show (October 29) saw the return of series two winners Carbide as they battled against other robots to try and make it through to the grand final.

They were up against Gabriel (yep, the team who caused a viral sensation last year when a full-grown man stormed out of the arena after losing to teenager Toby and his sisters), as well as other 'bots from the likes of classic teams such as Aftershock.

But it was the battle between underdogs Gabriel and reigning champions Carbide that got viewers at home talking. Gabriel lasted the full three minutes of the group battle in the arena with Carbide – something that would have been unheard of until now.

After Carbide's dominance of the last season, many of the teams had created their robots with the goal of defeating Carbide specifically in mind. There's been entanglers, faster spinners and more powerful robots.

The aim? To avoid damage – and inflicting as much as possible on their rivals, of course.

"They're having to work harder than ever before," presenter Dara O'Brien noted of Carbide's struggle in the arena.

In the end, Carbide managed to win that battle with Gabriel – and the following two, leaving them the winners of tonight's episode.

Robot Wars continues next Sunday (November 5) at 8pm on BBC Two.
