After being forced to delete her Instagram account due to racist and sexist abuse, Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran has received further support from the industry.

Katie Leung, who portrayed Cho Chang in the Harry Potter franchise, has taken to social media brandishing a T-shirt of Kelly in defence of the Last Jedi performer.

It follows a huge outpouring of support for Kelly from the likes of Mark Hamill, Rian Johnson, Kumail Nanjiani, Jenny Han and more.

Katie, who's set to appear later this year in ITV drama Strangers, also used her Twitter account to directly hit back at online trolls, which was met with appreciation by fans.

"Racism/misogyny is a bitch," she wrote in reply to one comment. "Get well soon."

Kelly has previously discussed her pride at appearing in the Star Wars universe as an Asian American. "I remember what it felt like to not see anyone like myself in books or on film or TV," she explained. "When you're really young, you tend to fall in love with characters.

"If you start seeing the same type of character everywhere and realise that they don't look like you or they don't speak like you, you start wanting to change who you are. That's something that I did when I was a young kid. I'm excited to be a part of this positive change."

The 29-year-old continued: "A lot of Star Wars fans who are specifically Asian never had a character they could dress up like, or they would and people would always call them 'Asian Rey' or 'Asian fill-in-the-blank'.

"I get very emotional when I see people who are able to identify with this character. That means a lot to me and I don't think it will ever get old."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
