Puss in Boots: The Last Wish spoilers follow.

The latest Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, isn't coming out in the UK until next year, but it's out in US cinemas already.

While the delay may be disappointing, it does mean that we get to delve into the film and how it sets up the long-awaited fifth Shrek film.

We're glad to report that the film does indeed tease Shrek 5, and does so in a very simple way.

Following a brief appearance from the famous ogre in a dialogue-free scene, the film ends with Puss and his friends Kitty Softpaws and therapy dog Perrito on a boat, with the titular protagonist saying he wants to go see some "old friends". In the distance, Far Far Away is seen.

It's been a while since we've had any concrete news about Shrek 5, with one of the latest things we've heard about it coming from the script writer, Austin Powers' Michael McCullers.

"I finished that script, which I really, really, really love. It's really personal to me," he said.

"It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal, but... reinvention was sort of called for. There's been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they're great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point."

Let's hope that there will be an update soon.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is out now in US cinemas. It will be released in UK cinemas on February 2, 2023.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.

A big fan of TV and movies both mainstream and obscure, Joe's main interest is in video gaming. Although particularly a PlayStation gamer, he plays across Xbox, Nintendo and PC/Steam Deck, and likes to keep tabs on many games he's not got the time to play.

Joe currently does not use Twitter, but he only ever used it to tell people to watch the film Help! I'm a Fish (which you really should do).
