Recap: Michigan recovers after slow start, now 7-0 after 52-7 win over Indiana

It is hard to believe that after the first quarter, Indiana led, 7-0, and could have led by more if not for an interception by Rod Moore, tipped by Mike Sainristil.

J.J. McCarthy soon got the Wolverines back on track as the Wolverines went on a 52-0 run and improved to 7-0 after the 52-7 victory.

"J.J., eight straight scoring drives, another phenomenal performance by him," coach Jim Harbaugh told Fox Sports on the field after the game.

McCarthy finished 14 of 17 for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

"We knew they were going to come out punching and we just responded," McCarthy told Fox Sports. "Scoring on our last eight drives was huge. It just proves the work we put in this week."

Blake Corum had 13 carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Donovan Edwards had nine carries for 20 yards and his first touchdown of the season.

Colston Loveland had three catches for 80 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown. Tyler Morris had four for 54 yards. Roman Wilson did get his ninth touchdown of the season.

There were lots of defensive stars, including Moore, Mason Graham, Keon Sabb, Michael Bennett and more.

6:03 4Q: Tuttle finds English for the touchdown, 52-7

There was no need to keep J.J. McCarthy -- or any of the starters, for that matter -- in the game.

But somehow Michigan keeps on scoring.

Jack Tuttle found Karmello English in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.

So that is now a 52-0 run for the Wolverines.

11:46 4Q: Michigan gets another interception, still 45-7

Keon Sabb had a pick-6 last week but had to settle for the interception and a 28-yard return.

12:02 4Q: Edwards gets the TD, 45-7 Michigan

It was finally Donovan Edwards' turn to rush for a touchdown and it was a two-yard run to complete the drive following the Mason Graham fumble recovery.

I think Blake Corum was even happier than Edwards was.

The Wolverines have scored on seven straight drives for the first time since Oct. 29, 2022 against Michigan State, according to FOX.

It is now a 45-0 run for the Wolverines.

End 3Q: Michigan forces fumble, leads 38-7

It is another forced fumble for the formidable Michigan defense, this time Mason Graham with the club hand.

And when you make a play like that, you have to celebrate, right?

5:18 3Q: Michigan gets sack, fumble recovery and FG

Michigan's defense has definitely asserted itself and Michael Barrett forced Tayven Jackson to fumble, then Barrett recovered the fumble.

J.J. McCarthy was sacked on the ensuing drive so Michigan settled for a 28-yard field goal from James Turner.

8:28 3Q: McCarthy to Morgan, 35-7 Michigan

J.J. McCarthy continues in the groove he established in the second quarter.

This time it was a 5-play, 52-yard drive which culminated in McCarthy's 7-yard touchdown to freshman Semaj Morgan.

Blake Corum had three carries for 23 yards on the drive.

That is a 35-0 run for the Wolverines.

12:22 3Q: McCarthy finds Loveland, 28-7 Michigan

That was a typical J.J. McCarthy-led drive.

McCarthy ran for a first down in addition to throwing to Tyler Morris for eight yards.

Then he found tight end Colston Loveland for a 54-yard score.

Halftime: Michigan leads Indiana, 21-7

That first quarter was a doozy but Michigan managed to right the ship in the second quarter.

J.J. McCarthy was 11 of 14 for 153 yards and a touchdown to Roman Wilson.

Blake Corum had eight carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Donovan Edwards had six carries for 11 yards and two receptions for 33 yards.

Tyler Morris leads receivers with two catches for 37 yards, plus his impressive 30-yard punt return.

):11 2Q: Corum scores again, 21-7 Michigan

Indiana just gave Michigan too much time before halftime.

Tyler Morris had a beautiful 30-yard punt return to help give the Wolverines good field position and they took full advantage.

The play of the drive was when J.J. McCarthy was scrambling and managed to flip the ball to Donovan Edwards for a first down.

Blake Corum finished the drive with his 43rd career touchdown.

3:24 2Q: McCarthy hooks up with Wilson, 14-7 Michigan

Michigan looked a lot more like Michigan on that last drive.

J.J. McCarthy found Donovan Edwards, Tyler Morris twice, A.J. Barner before finally finding his favorite, Roman Wilson, for the two-yard touchdown.

Wilson has nine receiving touchdowns this season.

11:19 2Q: Corum in the end zone, 7-7

One thing is certain, Blake Corum is going to be Blake Corum.

After a 15-yard reception to the Indiana 5-yard line, Corum ran for four yards and then the final yard for the touchdown.

He now has 42 touchdowns in his Michigan career, passing his coach, Mike Hart with 41, for fourth all-time.

End 1Q: Indiana leads Michigan, 7-0

All of the numbers were in Indiana's favor in the first quarter.

The Hoosiers had seven first downs to the Wolverines' two and they were 4-6 on third downs.

They had 141 total yards to the Wolverines' 17; 102 yards passing to 13; 39 yards rushing compared to just four for the Wolverines.

If not for Rod Moore's interception, the score could have been worse.

2:17 1Q: Trick play works for Hoosiers, 7-0 Indiana

Well, this is certainly not the start that Michigan expected, especially at home.

Indiana has been successful driving the ball down the field so far.

On their last drive, the Hoosiers were intercepted by Rod Moore but on this one, they used a trick play, with Brendan Sorsby throwing to Donaven McCulley, who then threw to a wide-open Jaylin Lucas for a 44-yard touchdown.

6:35 1Q: Michigan gets big interception, still 0-0

Indiana's new offensive coordinator Rod Carey was making his presence felt, helping the Hoosiers drive down the field toward the end zone.

But after a false start penalty, quarterback Tayven Jackson was forced into a throwing situation and Michigan's defense took advantage.

Mike Sainristil got a hand on the ball and tipped it and it landed in the hands of Rod Moore, who took it to the 41-yard line.

Today's availability report

Michigan beat writer Angelique Chengelis has today's Michigan availability report:

Pregame

Michigan has been rolling along, doing everything it is supposed to do before meeting Penn State and Ohio State.

That does not mean coach Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines will overlook Indiana.

The Hoosiers had their bye last week but still managed to make some changes, promoting analyst Rod Carey to offensive coordinator over Walt Bell, who was fired.

With the bye, Carey might have had time to tinker with the offensive scheme. It's not likely enough to overcome the Wolverines, but maybe enough to overcome the 34½ spread.

After this game, it's rivalry week. However, there's not the usual hype as the Michigan State Spartans have not had the season they wanted for many reasons.
