Crunchella? Cap’n Crunch hosting cereal-themed Palm Springs pool party during Coachella

The cereal seafarer is turning 60, and kids aren't invited

Cap’n Crunch just hit the big 6-0. And apparently all the seafaring cereal mascot wants to do now is show off his best festival ’fit, throw back a few drinks and get his freak on beside a Palm Springs pool during Coachella weekend.

Later life crisis? Seemingly. Pushing the shameless absurdity of Palm Springs’ increasingly long tradition of immersive branding gimmicks to new extremes? Definitely.

But come on, if you like a man in uniform (and who doesn't?), you'll surely love seeing the captain in his swim trunks. And besides, you gotta be a little curious about how a pina colada garnished with crunch berries might taste.

Well, here’s likely the closest you'll ever come to finding out: The Cap’n Crunch cereal brand has announced it is transforming the pool at the Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs into a temporary monument to itself for “an all-out birthday experience” called Cap’n’s Cove.

People party during Splash House at Margaritaville in Palm Springs, Calif., June 11, 2022.

A press release for the bash explains it will take place on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., making it a great option for those who don’t want to choose between starting their festival morning with a big ol' bowl of cereal or a nice little buzz. And in the latest reminder that festival season brings no shortage of irony, the release explains that the sugary soiree is 21-and-up.

So what will this adults-only feting of a cartoon pitchman actually entail?

The release promises a bar, a cabana where attendees can customize their festival outfits and “experiential art installations." We’re immediately imagining Coachella’s iconic ballon chains, but with giant Cap’n Crunch pieces. Whatever it is will surely be even more mindblowing after a crunchy cocktail or three.

The event website also teases that guests will be surrounded by "'gram-worthy experiences and poolside photo ops," although anyone who has been within selfie-ing distance of one of these sorts of events knows that definitely goes without saying.

Then there’s the menu. While the release, sadly, doesn’t actually mention Crunch Berry coladas, it does promise “Crunch-inspired brunch items.” We think the cooks should probably steer clear of attempting crunch-topped bruschetta, but we wouldn’t say no to some crunch berries and crème if they want to class things up. But there’s no need to be too picky as food is free at the party, with drinks available for purchase.Singer and actress Renee Rapp — you might know her as Leighton from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” — is hosting and will perform on the “Shipwrecked Stage,” which the release says will be modeled of the S.S. Guppy ship that appeared in many early Cap’n Crunch commercials. Before Rapp starts her set, DJ Anderson Paak (who has dubbed himself DJ Pee.Wee) will play what is billed “as a mix of nostalgic and upbeat tunes.”

The party is open to the public, with attendees admitted on a first-come, first-served basis after they sign a required waiver. However, those eager to lock in their brush with cereal royalty can sign up for priority and expedited entry via the “Smooth Sailing List” at capnscove.com. The webpage does not list an overall capacity for the event but states that space is limited and recommends arrival by 11 a.m. But you might consider getting their even earlier: the first 500 people through the door get a free drink.

And a quick note to cereal marketers: The next two festival weekends are still open if you'd like to give staging your own Cocoachella or Stagecrunch a shot. We're looking at you, Kellogg's.
