Britain's O'Brien retires from tennis - even though she's only 25
Calling it a day: Katie O'Brien
Former British number one Katie O'Brien has retired at the age of 25.
O'Brien, from Hessle, Yorkshire, is ranked 281st in the world but had been as high as 84th last year.
She said: 'I know I'm retiring at a relatively early age but having been completely committed to tennis for a long time I feel ready to explore different avenues of life.'
The news isn't a great surprise, with O'Brien admitting she was thinking of quitting after losing 6-0, 7-5 to 40-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm at Wimbledon.
She said then: 'I’m not enjoying life on tour. It’s no fun.
'I will have to make some big improvements if I’m going to continue. I’m academically quite able as well so there are other things I could do.'
