A man who was caught masturbating in the bushes of a busy beach in view of onlookers told police he 'had never done it before' after being caught with his pants down.

The ex-serviceman, 64, was caught in the act by officers along Mudjimba Beach on the Sunshine Coast at around 9.30am on May 28.

Police were called after people complained that two men were taking part in 'lewd and indecent acts' in 'clear view' of beachgoers, the Sunshine Coast Daily reported.

Police arrived to see a man and a second man facing each other with their penises exposed, and masturbating within just 100 metres of people on the sand of Mudjimba Beach on the Sunshine Coast on May 28

Marrochydore Magistrates Court heard on Thursday that the other man fled the scene after officers arrived, and left the other on his own.

The court heard the man told police he had only just met the other man, and said he 'had never done it before'.

The father-of-two previously served nearly 40 years in the military, and has no criminal history.

He pleaded guilty on Thursday to public nuisance, with his lawyer telling the court he is 'extremely remorseful' for what he did.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said the man should be happy he wasn't charged with a worse offence that others who committed similar acts had been.

'People are enjoying the beach and you or those in the sand dunes are polluting the sand dunes,' he said, Mr Stjerqvist said.

He was fined $500 with no conviction.
