“American Gothic” — which depicts a farmer standing beside his daughter, pitchfork in hand — is one of the most famous pieces of art in history. But if it were painted today, rather than in 1930, the piece would need a few coronavirus-inspired updates.
For one, the subjects are not socially distancing. And for another, they don’t have masks.
But Silvio’s Photoworks, in Torrance, took care of that.
The Hawthorne Boulevard business recently painted a mural on its windows recreating Grant Wood’s Great Depression-era classic, but with a few necessary tweaks. The father and his daughter still stand in front of a Carpenter Gothic house in Iowa. But instead of shoulder-to-shoulder, the pair stand 6 feet apart. And both wear face coverings so they don’t inadvertently spread the coronavirus, if they have it.
The daughter also has a camera around her neck — a nod to the shop whose storefront the painting adorns.
Next to the “American Gothic” update, meanwhile, is a mural of a healthcare worker and the words, “Thank you, front line heroes!”
