Natural Phenomenon: Broken Spectre
Sometimes mistaken for an enormous ghostly figure with a halo of rainbow colours, a Brocken Spectre is actually a rare phenomenon that occurs at high altitude when the sun is low and behind a walker or climber whose shadow is then cast onto the cloud, mist or fog below. Diffraction causes a rainbow-like halo and as depth perception is altered by the fog, the shadow looks eerie and oversized.
If the conditions are right on one of our high-level walks, perhaps you will be lucky enought to see a Brocken Spectre.
