Known for his big-ticket fashion campaigns and ambitious personal projects, photographer and graphic designer Mohamed Al Kindy, known as Chndy, has played a vital role in crafting the image of the modern Middle East.

This interview is part of The World Made Local, a global collaboration between the seven international editions of Condé Nast Traveler in which 100 people in 100 countries tell us why their home turf should be your next destination.

Where in Oman did you grow up, and where’s your favorite place to return to now?

I grew up in Muscat, and every time I go back I need at least a week back there, because I miss everything about home. I try to go to as many places as possible when I return.

How would you describe Oman’s creative scene?

There’s a huge amount of potential in Oman’s creative scene that’s ready to be explored. A lot of people don’t know that.

How does your country still influence your creative work now?

I constantly draw inspiration from my childhood and adolescence years. I loved running around the city, exploring its hidden gems and incredible nature, when I was growing up. My time growing up in Oman ignited my curiosity, and that curiosity is what drives my creative work today.

If someone is visiting for 24 hours, where are five places they should visit?

It depends on the kind of trip you’re looking for; the beauty of Oman is that it suits travelers looking for adventure and looking to explore, as well as those that prefer to just relax. If you want to experience Oman like a local, a must-visit is the Friday market in Nizwa; I love how authentic and eclectic it is. Everyone should visit Jebel Akhdar for the incredible mountain views; the amazing nature at Wadi Shab, just outside Muscat (there you can go hiking and swim in caves); and the bustling Muttrah Souq. You have to try any of the street-food spots where you can get mishkak—marinated skewered meats, one of Oman’s most beloved street foods.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about Oman, but often don’t?

To be honest, everything! I believe Oman has a lot of hidden gems that people don’t know about, and you need more than one trip to discover it all.

When you’re looking to get inspired, where do you go?

Definitely [the city of] Nizwa. My family is originally from Nizwa, so it evokes such a sense of nostalgia; it reminds me of my childhood.
