Historical Background: The Locarno Treaties were negotiated in 1925 regarding the sanctity of Germany’s western border. This primary treaty was signed by France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Great Britain; a number of other geopolitical agreements were reached at this same Swiss conference. According to the Library of Congress, “In 1936, Adolf Hitler denounced the Locarno Pact and sent German troops back into the Rhineland.”
