Ben McKenzie Shares Why He Married Morena Baccarin on Her Birthday

When Benjamin McKenzie (better known as The O.C. heartthrob Ryan Atwood) married Gotham costar Morena Baccarin in June this year, our hearts all collectively broke a little knowing that our favorite moody, troubled dream boy was officially off the market. But McKenzie's story gets even sweeter—the star recently revealed the adorable reason he tied the knot with his wife on June 2, the date that also happens to be her birthday.

“I just got hitched,” the actor said as he displayed his wedding ring in an interview with Harry Connick Jr, on Harry. “We wanted to get married at the Botanic Gardens in Brooklyn, which was beautiful. When we wanted to book it, which was over a year in advance in our defense, the only date available was my wife’s birthday."

“It is sweet or so I thought,” he added and mentioned that his wife gave him one important rule to follow after they set the date. “It’s sweet, and half of her loves that and I think she just wants me to be clear that she is going to get a birthday present and there is going to be an anniversary gift and it's a whole week. She's Brazilian and birthdays are very special.”

McKenzie and Baccarin officially met in 2014 while filming Gotham together and went public with their relationship in 2015—but the two may have crossed paths earlier on. Baccarin was once a guest star on an episode of The O.C., though it's been said that the two didn't have any scenes together and as a result, didn't cross paths at the time. (Is this a real life rom-com or what?) The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Frances Laiz Setta Schenkkan, in March 2016.

McKenzie added that the pressure is definitely on for making June 2 a special day from now on.

“The good news is if I do it right, it’s going to be a great year every year, if I hit June 2nd we are good but if I forget anniversary and birthday, it’s going to be a bad year," he added.
