It was an English designer, albeit one who worked for a French house, which in a way, was a message to the world: ‘Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong.’ I thought she looked fantastic.”

Not only did the final product deeply resonate with the public, but the design process was a fulfilling one for Waight Keller. The designer worked closely with Markle to create the number, which led to a close friendship between the two of them. “It was just a pleasure to create in this very, very private way,” Waight Keller reflected. “It was just the two of us for so long, and it became this very personal girlfriend relationship.” The designer even included a secret “something blue” detail that only the two women knew about. According to Waight Keller, she sewed a blue gingham check into the hem of Markle's wedding dress.

When Markle walked down the aisle, Waight Keller said seeing the royal bride wearing her creation was surreal. “It was an extraordinary moment,” she shared. “It was an incredible thing to be part of, such a historic moment, and in fact, to have the opportunity to work with her.”

According to the outlet, as soon as Markle, a champion of women's equality, met Waight Keller, the first female artistic director of Givenchy, she knew the British designer was the perfect choice for her bridal gown designer. In addition to Waight Keller's achievements as a female powerhouse in the fashion industry, the royal bride was drawn to the designer’s “elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanor,” per the Kensington Palace.
