Buzz Discoveries: Liya Talks Signing To DMW, Forthcoming EP, “Alari”, Challenges and More...

Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola popularly known as Liya is a Nigerian female singer and songwriter who is the first female act signed on to Davido’s led DMW Imprint.

The tuneful songstress debuted under the label with the record “Melo” which starred Davido as a model and on this new episode of Buzz Discoveries, the singer gives a detailed account of how she got signed to DMW, her musical influences, her soon-to-be-released EP, Alari, and more.

The 21-year-old singer begins by talking about her forthcoming EP titled “Alari”

“The title of the EP is Alari, and Alari means She that is so separate” - She said. She further explains that Alari is her middle name.

On why the EP is titled Alari, Liya says it’s because Alari is a very special name to her and she was named after her grandmother and the name says a lot about the EP cos’ it’s an interesting body of work as it navigates around her roots, her culture and her religion being a Muslim.

Talking about features on the EP, Davido happens to be the only featured act as the EP aims at showcasing her talents.

On how she got signed to Davido’s DMW, she explains;

“It’s a sweet story. It was on a Thursday/Friday, I was hanging out with my friend, Vanessa and we were just having fun and we went home and she was like, B-Red is having his listening party, let’s attend and we went...from there we attend Peruzzi’s listening party and we were in his car and we played my song Melo and he liked the song and we ended up at a club with Davido….and he introduced me to Davido (Mimics Davido) and Davido asked for "Melo" to be played. He liked it and said he wanted to sign me...and from there he heard other songs and from there...and the next minute he announced on his Twitter that he wanted to sign a female artist and the next thing he posted my picture.”

Liya explains that the encounter was surreal as everything happened in a space of about 5 hours and the whole process overwhelmed her.

The singer reveals that before meeting Davido she had released a song on the 16th September 2020 titled “Be My Vibe” and in less than a month she met with Davido.

Liya further reveals that “Melo” was released 3 days before meeting Davido.

Her forthcoming EP, “Alari” houses 6 tracks including her previously released “Melo” and the experience working on the EP was nice and all songs were written by her.

Liya discloses some of the challenges she faced before being signed to DMW.
