Greetings, Earthlings. We come in … peace? Katy Perry unveiled the extraterrestrial video for her latest single, “Not the End of the World,” starring none other than Zooey Deschanel on Monday (Dec. 21).
In the clip, a pair of blue aliens are tasked with saving the pop star from Earth’s impending destruction, only to accidentally beam up her lookalike — Deschanel — when the two stars cross paths during the bungled abduction.
Quickly realizing the aliens’ mistake, (don’t worry, extraterrestrials, plenty of Earthlings see the resemblance too …) the She & Him singer agrees to play along in exchange for their help in, you know, saving the planet.
“It’s not the end of the world/ No, not the end of the world/ Throw on your fancy attire/ Fears in the fire/ Don’t lose hope/ It’s not funeral we’re attending/ Actually just the beginning/ Throw on your fancy attire/ Fears in the fire/ Don’t lose hope,” Deschanel lip syncs in a celebratory concert for the alien race after getting dressed up in Perry’s iconic Teenage Dream-era wig and whipped cream cone bra from 2010’s “California Girls” video. (Turns out, all Earth needs to be saved is a swift unplugging of the planet’s internet!)

“Not the End of the World” serves as the third official single off Perry’s sixth studio set, Smile, following “Daisies” and the empowering title track. (Past one-off singles “Never Really Over” and “Harleys in Hawaii” also made the album’s track list after being released and given music video treatments in 2019.) The anthemic track also features on the singer’s new Cosmic Energy EP alongside past hits such as “E.T.” and “Wide Awake.”
Smile bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in August, becoming the star’s fifth consecutive album to land within the top 10 — following 2010’s Teenage Dream, 2013’s Prism and 2017’s Witness, all of which peaked at No. 1, and 2009’s One of the Boys, which reached No. 9.
